(DIPF/Orig.)

Am 18. Juni 2018 verstarb Oberstudienrätin Gertrud Kummer zwei Tage vor ihrem 89. Geburtstag in Berlin. Stein, 1991). (Autor)
In 1986 the evangelical Studiengemeinschaft Wort und Wissen [Study Alliance Word and Knowledge] published a textbook entitled Entstehung und Geschichte der Lebewesen. Daten und Deutungen für den schulischen Bereich [The Origin and History of Creatures. Data and Interpretations for the Curricular Field]. Even though the responsible school authorities rejected applications for its approval as a schoolbook, which were submitted by the publisher Weyel in several Federal States, 50,000 sold copies and its utilization in denominational schools show the ambivalence of the situation. By publishing the seventh edition entitled Evolution. Ein kritisches Lehrbuch [Evolution. A Critical Textbook] in 2013, the editors Reinhard Junker and Siegfried Scherer emphasize once again a prevailing effort to establish their book. The 30-year history of this textbook was accompanied by a dispute about creationism at German schools with contributions of reputable representatives from the fields of politic, science, and religion (cp. Kutschera/Hoßfeld 2012; Kutschera 2014a). The intent of this presentation is to reconstruct the development of the textbook and in doing so to disclose the ambition of the editors and supporters to socially legitimize it by integrating it into school. Using the example of the public scientific critique and the agenda of the publishing companies, the approaches to socially delegitimize the educational medium are going to be elucidated. Beside the textbook as the object of dispute, publications and activities of the participating groups is the material base for this study. For the main actors typical fragments of their dispute positions will be presented, furthermore those fragments are going to be exemplarily subjected to a detailed content analysis, which will shed light on the institutional context, linguistic-rhetoric means, and content-ideological statements. Finally this approach serves as a reflection of arguments shaped in this debate and for future use of this topic as knowledge about a "critical textbook", which is worth of criticism from a scientific point of view. Schoolbook research is in particular topical after radical political changes and if it concerns the reputation of the publisher (cp. Pöggeler 2003). Both were the case in 1989 due to political and social changes on the territory of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which ultimately led to changes in the socially favored values and standard notions as well. Since schoolbooks and curricula are subject to governmental influences (cp. Wiater 2006), the question of modifications in the presentation of the subjects arises. The aim of this analysis is, in the context of social political transformation, the amendment of aim, context and presentation in biology schoolbooks of the publishing house Volk und Wissen, using the example of 10th grade evolutionary biology. For that purpose relevant schoolbooks were, in the context of a quantitative analysis of the content, evaluated product-oriented. The analysis of the computer-based transliterated schoolbooks was carried out via QDA-Software based on an open encoding process. To broaden the understanding, additional material will be used for the explication of relevant contents (broad content analysis). In particular this refers to the presentation of ideologies, which are according to Berck and Graf (2010) present in biology schoolbooks in the majority of cases. In the concluding discussion the impact of the social change on the chosen educational media is pointed out to eventually contribute to "a better understanding of the school as broadcaster of knowledge in the society" (Depaepe/Simon 2003, p. 66). The scientific and public discussions over the last 200 years were, amongst others, shaped by findings from the field of evolutionary biology. Back in 1877, when Ernst Haeckel asked for the inclusion of evolutionary biology into class, he was met with fierce resistance (cp. Hoßfeld 2010, p. 56). As Lässig (cp. 2010, p. 199) argues, knowledge is socially shaped. The aim of this study is to reveal the development of the significance as well as the presentation of evolutionary biological contents in biology class within the SOZ/GDR and to embed it into the context of the respective prevailing political and social developments. Relevant curricula and schoolbooks as the most precise codification of the curricularly fixed contents (cp. Neuner 1989, p. 411) were used as raw material. For most subjects the history of schoolbooks has been poorly examined (cp. Pöggeler 2003, p. 37). Therefore, as basis for this study, only one primary descriptive thesis about evolutionary biology in class (cp. Rommel 2006) could be used. Based thereupon, an analytical framework will be introduced, which follows a multidimensional approach of research by containing aspects of the three reference systems: design, subject didactics, and subject discipline. Product oriented single and group analyses were used to evaluate the sources. This was carried out under the primacy of interdisciplinarity via analysis by content. The feedback of sociocultural changes on schoolbooks will be clarified in the concluding discussion. It will be shown that evolutionary contents occupied a significant position in biology classes within the SOZ/GDR and that the expression of those contents followed divergent approaches and preferences. The classification of teaching and learning materials as an informational, pedagogical and political issue (cp. Stein 1991) belongs to the same context. (DIPF/Orig.)
